A private jet crash during landing at Fez-Saïs Airport on Friday evening has sparked renewed concerns about civil aviation safety in Morocco.
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics confirmed in a statement that a “Hawker XP800” aircraft operated by Air Océan veered off the runway and collided with the airport’s perimeter fence after arriving from Marrakech. The crash caused major damage to the aircraft and injured all three crew members.
Following standard protocol, the Civil Aviation Accident Investigation and Analysis Bureau dispatched a team of technical investigators to the scene to determine the cause of the incident. The ministry said that all necessary steps had been taken to ensure transparency and maintain air transport safety, with updates to be provided as the investigation progresses.
Industry sources told Hespress that Fez-Saïs Airport is certified under international aviation safety standards and adheres to Morocco’s Aerodrome Certification Process.
Aziz Barhmi, a professor and transport expert at Ibn Tofail University, emphasized the ministry’s responsibility to oversee civil aviation infrastructure and enforce regulations. “The ongoing investigation should determine whether the crew followed international safety procedures, despite operating a private aircraft,” he said.
Barhmi noted that such incidents are typically rare and often linked to pilot error. He praised Morocco’s strong reputation in upholding international aviation treaties and standards.
He added that the ministry’s quick response and transparency regarding the crash serve as a positive indicator of Morocco’s commitment to aviation safety. “Investigations like this help us understand whether the risk was known and how future threats can be prevented through updated strategies,” he said.
