Nestled along the Atlantic coast between Rabat and Kenitra, the Sidi Boughaba Biological Reserve stands as an invaluable ecological treasure and a vital refuge for a diverse and abundant bird population, including rare and endangered species.
This exceptional site showcases a patchwork of Moroccan biodiversity, where nature flourishes in all its splendor. Declared a natural and cultural classified site in 1951, it was later designated a Ramsar Site in 1980, in accordance with the international convention protecting wetlands of global importance.
Located less than a kilometer from the Atlantic coast, the reserve plays a pivotal role in bird conservation, serving as a breeding and wintering ground for numerous species. Among them are the marbled teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and the red-knobbed coot (Fulica cristata), both of which face growing threats to their survival.
The reserve is structured around an interdunal depression, stretching from north-northeast to south-southwest, with the Lake of Sidi Boughaba as its central feature.
A Unique Ecosystem with Rich Biodiversity
Spanning between 150 and 200 hectares, depending on water levels, the lake is primarily fed by groundwater and is considered the last natural freshwater body along Morocco’s northwest coast.
Sidi Boughaba’s unique landscape is shaped by a diverse range of habitats, including:
-
Wetlands, comprising the aquatic basin and its marshy grasslands.
-
Surrounding dunes, which add to the ecological richness of the area.
This mosaic of ecosystems fosters an abundant and varied bird population, making it a prime location for ornithological observation and ecological research.
The land within the reserve falls under public ownership, classified within Morocco’s forestry domain and subject to land registration regulations. This legal framework ensures long-term conservation efforts, reinforcing the site’s status as a key biodiversity hotspot in North Africa.
