The average output of olive oil over the past three years has reached 100,000 tons, despite a significant decline in yields primarily due to climatic factors, Government Spokesperson Mustafa Baitas said
He highlighted that the national agricultural policy places olive oil production among its top priorities, acknowledging the challenges faced in maintaining consistent production levels.
In response to recent controversy surrounding figures released by the European Commission regarding Morocco’s olive oil exports to the European Union, Baitas clarified that the exports predominantly involve a specific type of oil—“extra virgin”—which possesses distinct qualities and is typically subject to contractual agreements with Morocco’s trade partners.
Baitas explained that only 4,600 tons of “extra virgin” olive oil have been exported from the total 100,000 tons produced, with overall exports not exceeding 8,000 tons.
He emphasized that these exports are accompanied by key regulatory measures to balance domestic supply and demand.
During the weekly press briefing following the Cabinet meeting, Baitas also outlined the government’s strategy of regulating exports while simultaneously encouraging imports to ensure sufficient supply to the national market.
This approach is not limited to olive oil, but extends to other agricultural products that have experienced production shortages, with the aim of maintaining a stable domestic market.
Baitas referred to the achievements under the Green Morocco Plan, which have expanded olive cultivation areas and provided vital support to growers and producers.
When questioned about the dismissal of 16 regional directors in the Ministry of National Education, Pre-School, and Sports, Baitas declined to comment, stating that he was not qualified to address such administrative matters.
He stressed that the press conference focused on government strategies and initiatives relevant to the public, concluding by avoiding further political discussions, noting that these would be addressed at an appropriate time.
