Morocco is set to participate in a high-level diplomatic meeting in Mecca during the first weekend of Ramadan.

The gathering, which will take place on March 6, will bring together the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, along with Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Morocco, to discuss pressing regional issues, with a particular focus on the situation in Gaza and Syria.

This meeting comes just two days after Egypt hosts an emergency Arab summit on March 4, dedicated to addressing the crisis in the Palestinian territory of Gaza.

The summit follows the latest plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gaza’s future, a proposal that has sparked widespread debate across the region.

The Mecca gathering will also coincide with the 163rd session of the GCC Ministerial Council, making it a crucial diplomatic event where Arab nations will align their stances on key regional developments.

According to the GCC Secretariat, the meeting will include joint ministerial discussions between the Gulf foreign ministers and their counterparts from Morocco, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

The upcoming meeting in Mecca is expected to address the recent developments in Gaza, where a fragile ceasefire has been holding following intense negotiations.

Both Israeli and Hamas officials have agreed to exchange the bodies of deceased hostages for the release of Palestinian prisoners, a move aimed at preserving the truce and preventing further escalation.

In recent months, Morocco has intensified its support for Palestinians amid escalating violence in Gaza.

On October 23, 2023, King Mohammed VI directed the dispatch of emergency humanitarian aid to Gaza, including substantial food supplies, medical products, and water, to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation.

The Moroccan government has also been vocal in international forums, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.

On November 9, 2023, during the International Humanitarian Conference for Gaza’s Civilian Population in Paris, Morocco reiterated its commitment to achieving peace and the need for a political solution that ensures the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Domestically, there has been a surge of public support for Palestinians. In June 2024, solidarity rallies were organized in 48 Moroccan cities, reflecting the strong sentiments of the Moroccan populace towards the plight of Palestinians in Gaza.
