Ibrahim Akhyam, a researcher in astronomical timing and a member of the Islamic Crescent Observation Project, said that sighting the Ramadan 1446 crescent moon will be extremely difficult this year.
Akhyam explained to Hespress that while astronomical calculations indicate the moon’s parameters are just above the required threshold, they are not strong enough to confirm visibility. He noted that “Ramadan 1446 will most likely begin on Sunday, March 2, 2025.”
Even in Morocco’s southern regions, where the sun sets last and crescent observation is most favorable, Akhyam said visibility remains uncertain.
“We cannot definitively say whether Ramadan will start on March 1 or 2. However, the more likely scenario is completing Sha’ban as 30 days, making March 2 the first day of Ramadan.”
Akhyam attributed the difficulty to “insufficient crescent sighting criteria, particularly the moon’s age and its duration above the horizon after sunset,” despite meeting the minimum requirements in other factors.
