Algerian farmers and exporters struggle as Morocco blocks date shipments
Monday 3 February 2025 - 15:25

Algerian date exporters are facing significant challenges as the Moroccan market remains closed due to ongoing political tensions.

Diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco soured in August 2021, leading to the severance of ties and restrictions, including a ban on Moroccan aircraft and Algerian banks refusing contracts for goods from Morocco.

Re-exporting through Tunisia is no longer an option, as Tunisian customs block Algerian dates to protect local production.

Although Algerian exporters like Ahmed Mayof acknowledge strong demand for dates in Morocco, they are unable to access the market.

They are focusing on other markets, including the UAE, France, and Spain, for the Ramadan 2025 campaign. Despite slightly lower volumes due to weather conditions, the quality of Algerian deglet nour dates remains consistent.atch.

Facing charges of organized theft, money laundering, and cybercrime, the suspect is in custody pending further investigations.
