Morocco's trade unions plan nationwide strike as final vote on strike law set for Monday

Morocco’s four major trade unions—the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), the Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT), the Democratic Workers’ Organization (ODT), and the Federation of Democratic Unions (FSD)—have announced a national general strike scheduled for Wednesday, February 5.

A press conference is set for Monday to outline the reasons behind this protest, notably the tense climate surrounding discussions on the strike law in the House of Councillors, which is set for a final vote today.

The 24-hour strike, according to the CDT, aims to protest what it calls the “despotism of the government,” which continues to push forward the strike law despite opposition.

The union also condemns the government’s failure to address the rising costs of living and inflation.

The UMT, on the other hand, criticizes the government for what it sees as “irresponsible” management, particularly its unpopular public policies.

The union highlights the decline in workers’ purchasing power and the suspension of social dialogue for two consecutive sessions without explanation, violating agreements between the government, unions, and employers.

The UMT also rejects the strike law, considering it a unilateral move by the government that disregards the framework of social dialogue. The union argues that this law violates Morocco’s constitution, which guarantees the right to strike, and ignores union concerns.
