Feasibility studies for the ambitious tunnel project connecting Morocco and Spain under the Strait of Gibraltar, initially expected to be completed by 2030, suggest the project will be finished by 2040 due to its technical complexity, Spanish media reported.
The tunnel, planned to link Punta Paloma in Spain with Punta Malabata in Morocco, would serve as a crucial transportation corridor between Europe and North Africa.
Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente is spearheading the initiative in collaboration with Moroccan authorities, including the National Society for Strait Studies (SNED).
Secegsa is overseeing the project, working alongside Herrenknecht Iberica, the Spanish subsidiary of the German engineering firm Herrenknecht, which is conducting a feasibility study.
The tunnel will primarily accommodate rail transport for passengers and freight, with a possible extension for road traffic. Despite seismic challenges, the project promises to enhance trade, investment, and Morocco’s strategic role as a gateway to Africa.
