Gibraltar’s long-running ferry link with Morocco will be discontinued as the territory prepares for new post-Brexit border arrangements with Spain, ending a direct sea connection that carried particular importance for Gibraltar’s Moroccan community.

The service, operated by DFDS, formerly FRS, linked Gibraltar with Morocco across the Strait and was used by families, workers and residents maintaining ties between the Rock and northern Morocco. The Gibraltar government said the closure follows the new arrangements due to take effect at the Gibraltar-Spain frontier.

The change comes as the UK-EU agreement on Gibraltar is expected to enter provisional application on July 15, 2026. The deal is designed to remove routine land-border friction between Gibraltar and Spain, a key issue after Brexit because thousands of workers and visitors cross the frontier daily.

For Moroccan residents in Gibraltar, however, the end of the ferry also removes a direct route that avoided travel through Spain. The Gibraltar government has separately warned families inviting relatives from Morocco this summer that Moroccan nationals travelling to Gibraltar via Spain will need a Schengen visa before departure.

he ferry had served as a practical bridge for family visits, religious occasions, cultural links and small-scale economic movement between Gibraltar and Morocco. Its disappearance shifts travel toward Spanish ports and Schengen-controlled routes, adding paperwork for relatives who do not already hold the necessary visa.

Gibraltar officials said the route’s closure would be felt most strongly by the Moroccan community, whose presence has long formed part of the territory’s social and economic life. The government said its Morocco Desk would continue to assist residents navigating the new travel requirements.

DFDS continues to operate high-frequency Spain-Morocco routes, including Algeciras-Tanger Med and Ceuta services, but those alternatives require travel through Spain rather than a direct Gibraltar-Morocco crossing.
