More than 600 “go-fast” boats are suspected of being involved in drug trafficking operations in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spanish media reported, citing Spain’s Department of National Security (DSN).

The report highlights the reemergence of the hashish trafficking route between Morocco and Spain in 2025.

It warned that criminal organizations operating from Morocco are increasingly avoiding approaching the Spanish coast to reduce the risk of interception and the potential loss of vessels.

Traffickers are also relying more on alternative types of vessels, including small rigid inflatable boats, fishing boats, sailboats and recreational craft, to carry out smuggling operations.

The report said hashish is loaded off Morocco’s Atlantic coast and transported by sea to West African countries such as Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea before being moved overland through the Sahel to Libya. From there, it is shipped onward to Europe or the Middle East.

It added that criminal networks are boosting profits and complicating detection through “swaps between cocaine and hashish,” using the same vessels to transport drugs in opposite directions between Africa and Europe.

The report also emphasized that proximity to Morocco has contributed to the return of air smuggling methods, including the use of light aircraft and drones in clandestine flights between Morocco and Spain to transport hashish shipments.
