Four Moroccan truck drivers who disappeared between Burkina Faso and Niger last weekend remain stranded in Niger despite being located, industry sources tell Hespress AR.
The drivers, whose disappearance sparked concern among transportation unions, have yet to recover their trucks or return to Morocco.
Anonymous sources reported that Moroccan diplomatic officials have declined to share information about the drivers’ situation with transportation professionals, including members of African transport unions.
Representatives from these unions visited the Moroccan embassy in Niger seeking updates. While they received reassurances about the drivers’ safety, no timeline was provided for their return or the retrieval of their vehicles.
Unions are expected to reach out to Moroccan authorities early this week to address the issue and ensure the drivers can resume work and return home safely.
Both Moroccan and African unions condemned the situation, calling on governments to protect transportation professionals from criminal gangs operating in unstable regions.
“This is not the first such incident,” one source told Hespress AR. “Drivers frequently face assaults at border crossings, especially in countries with precarious security conditions.”
The four Moroccan drivers were initially reported missing between Burkina Faso and Niger before union sources confirmed they had been found.
Transportation professionals are urging African governments to secure trade routes and ensure the safety of drivers delivering goods across the continent.
