Morocco has revamped its economy and policies to meet the UN’s ambitious goals through boosting the economy while protecting the environment and improving social conditions for all, says a recent report by the Brookings Institution.

Under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, Morocco has focused on reducing inequality and fostering social stability.

Over the years, Morocco has transitioned from a low-income to a lower-middle-income economy.

Its GDP has grown by an average of 3.2% annually in the past decade, despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sectors such as automotive, renewable energy, and agriculture have been key drivers of this growth.

The report says that Morocco is now Africa’s largest car manufacturer, exporting 700,000 vehicles in 2024 and increasingly focusing on electric vehicles.

This industry generates over $14 billion in annual export revenues, supported by robust infrastructure like the Tangier Med port.

One of the main goals Morocco has targeted is SDG 7, which focuses on affordable and clean energy.

The Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, one of the largest solar power plants in the world, stands out as a major achievement.

By 2030, Morocco aims to generate 52% of its energy from renewable sources. This shift not only reduces the country’s reliance on fossil fuels but also highlights its dedication to fight

When it comes to SDG 1, ending poverty, Morocco has taken big steps. The Generalization of Social Protection project, launched in 2021, is set to extend health coverage to 22 million people by 2025.

On top of that, direct cash transfers introduced in 2023 aim to support 7 million children and 3 million families, helping reduce poverty.

Education has also been a priority, contributing to SDG 4, which ensures quality education for all. Primary school enrollment in Morocco reached 99% in 2022, showing just how far the country has come in providing access to education.

Meanwhile, healthcare improvements have aligned with SDG 3, focusing on good health and well-being.

Maternal mortality rates have dropped significantly, from 227 per 100,000 live births in 2004 to 72.6 in 2020, reflecting Morocco’s focus on better health services.
