Kim Jong-Un has reportedly ordered all divorcing couples in North Korea to labor camps for up to 6 months, in an effort to curb the country’s rising divorce rates.

According to the North Korean leader, divorce is a tell-tale sign of “anti-socialist sympathies” and warrants punishment, independent news service Radio Free Asia reported.

Previously, only the spouse who initiated the divorce was punished in labor camps.

“There are about 80 women, and 40 men imprisoned in the county labor training camp,” a divorced woman who just finished her sentence told RFA, adding that “about 30 men and women were imprisoned due to divorce decrees, and the women’s sentences were longer.”

Pyongyang also implemented an education campaign targeting women, encouraging them not to pursue divorce in addition to publicly shaming the parents of divorced couples as well as officials at companies with high divorce rates among employees.
