ChatGPT stopped working for many users on Thursday afternoon, with OpenAI stating that its AI app was experiencing problems for some. The app recovered several hours later, the San Francisco-based company said.
The artificial intelligence company said in an update to its status page late Thursday evening that ChatGPT had reached “full recovery” by evening.
“OpenAI will conduct a full root cause analysis of this outage and share details on this page once complete,” OpenAI said.
The company had previously stated that Sora, its video generation model, as well as its automated application programming interface, which enables software programs to communicate with each other, were operational. But on Thursday evening, it said it was “currently investigating a separate incident involving Sora”, but gave no further details.
More than 15,000 incidents were reported by OpenAI users on Thursday afternoon, most of the problems related to ChatGPT, according to Downdetector, an online platform that provides users with real-time information on the status of various websites and services.
“ChatGPT, the API and Sora are currently experiencing high error rates. The problem is caused by an upstream provider and we are currently monitoring it,” the company wrote.
Launched in 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT service can generate human-like responses based on user prompts, and by the end of the summer had over 200 million active users.
