In his opening address at the Socialist International’s conference, which began today in Rabat under the auspices of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), Spanish Prime Minister and leader of the Socialist International, Pedro Sánchez, warned that “democratic pluralism and human rights face more challenges than ever.”

He pointed during  the Socialist International’s conference, which began today in Rabat under the auspices of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces to the global threats to leftist values, citing the devastation in East Africa caused by extremism and tribalism, and the ongoing wars in the Middle East, where “innocent lives are lost daily with an inexplicable international silence.”

He also condemned violations of sovereignty, using Ukraine as a key example.

Sánchez stressed the crucial role of leftist parties in today’s world, declaring that their voice is “not just important, but necessary.” He called for defending “the existence of a Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel,” while also supporting efforts to help Lebanon and Syria rebuild. He emphasized that “for the voice of leftist parties to be sincere, we must reject double standards in the issues we address.”

On the rise of the far-right, Sánchez warned that it poses a “threat to democracy and gender equality,” with far-right leaders using technology to spread their ideologies. He condemned the “normalization of extremism” and urged leftists to “stand firmly with international organizations” and raise “the flags of democracy, freedom, and human rights high.”

Idriss Lachgar, leader of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), echoed Sánchez’s call for a new African narrative, stating that “Africa can be part of the solution, not just the future of crises,” thanks to its human capital, resources, and economic opportunities.

He stressed the importance of turning these opportunities into reality to ensure a “brighter future.”

Lachgar also highlighted Morocco’s democratic progress, noting that despite challenges, the country has “developed state institutions and strengthened its democratic path,” making it a “cornerstone of stability” in the region.

On security, Lachgar emphasized the need for safe migration policies and stronger international cooperation to combat terrorism and human trafficking. He also reiterated the call for international recognition of Palestine, urging “all nations to recognize the State of Palestine” and take concrete steps to end the occupation.
