With the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria on Sunday, the last Arab regime supporting the Polisario Front in the Middle East has collapsed.
Syria historically provided political support to the Polisario and officially recognized it, which led to tensions with Morocco that had been escalating since the 1960s.
During the Arab Spring, Morocco severed ties with Assad, and to this day, it remains among those countries opposing the normalization of relations, especially given Syria’s ongoing support for the Polisario Front.
Additionally, Syria’s close relations with Iran further fueled these tensions, contributing to Syria’s backing of the Polisario.
The latest effort by the Syrian regime to pressure Morocco was in June 2024, when Syria, in cooperation with the Polisario representative in Damascus and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, organized a conference in Lebanon.
