Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui, a defender for Manchester United, refused to wear a jacket supporting “LGBTQ+ pride” ahead of his team’s recent match against Everton last Sunday in the 12 round of the Premier League.
According to The Athletic, Mazraoui declined to wear a rainbow-colored jacket that promotes LGBTQ+ rights during the warm-up before the Everton match and while entering the field.
The source explained that the “Atlas Lion” informed his teammates of his stance, stating that he would not wear the jacket for religious reasons.
This led the Manchester United players to reverse their decision to wear them, despite the club carrying out this initiative each season around the same time.
The same source added that Mazraoui’s teammates decided not to wear the jacket after learning of his decision, in order to avoid him standing alone in his position, though some figures within the club were not pleased with the Moroccan player’s stance.
Mazraoui joined Egyptian player Sam Morsy, captain of Ipswich Town, who also refused to wear an armband featuring similar colors during the past two rounds of the Premier League.
Mazraoui joined Manchester United at the start of the current season from Bayern Munich and has featured in 20 matches across all competitions, providing two assists.
He has been deployed in several positions and has received widespread praise from fans, who consider him one of the club’s best signings recently.
