Jewish communities of Moroccan descent in Israel strongly condemned the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. They accused the court of bias and of stripping Israel’s right to defend its citizens, reiterating their support for Netanyahu despite the charges.
Sam Ben Shtrit, president of the World Federation of Moroccan Jews, dismissed the ICC ruling, insisting it would not be enforced.
He emphasized that Netanyahu enjoys significant popular support in Israel and has powerful international allies who will oppose the decision. Ben Shtrit also praised Israel’s independent judicial system for its impartial investigations into violations.
President of the World Federation of Jews of Marrakech, criticized the ICC for focusing solely on Israel’s actions in response to the October 7 attacks, while ignoring other global atrocities, and suggested that the ruling reflected a broader pattern of anti-Semitism and rejected the court’s selective justice.
David Kanan, a Moroccan-Israeli community leader, echoed similar concerns, calling the ICC’s decision “nonsense” and arguing that it unfairly placed the blame on Israel for defending its citizens.
He likened the October 7 massacres to Nazi atrocities against Jews during World War II.
While many international and Arab countries backed the ICC’s decision, Ben Shtrit pointed out that Israel has never obstructed Palestinian statehood, but would not accept violence in return for peace.
