The Arab League Council of Permanent Delegates held an extraordinary meeting in Cairo on Thursday to examine the Israeli Knesset’s decision to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Palestinian territories.

Morocco was represented in this meeting, held on the initiative of Jordan and supported by several Arab countries, by Morocco’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Mohamed Ait Ouali.

On this occasion, the head of UNRWA’s Representative Office in Egypt, Sahar Al-Jobury, said that at a time of growing conflict and unrest in the region, ending UNRWA’s activities could lead to the collapse of one of the region’s foundations of stability.

In this respect, she stressed that UNRWA paid a heavy price from the outbreak of the war in Gaza, fulfilling for over a year its missions delegated by the UN General Assembly, adding that 237 Agency employees perished and over 200 buildings were damaged, in violation of the international humanitarian law.

For his part, Ait Ouali reiterated the Kingdom’s continuous position in support of the Palestinian cause, which HM King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, considers a fundamental and capital cause in Morocco’s foreign policy, noting that the Sovereign has always recalled the Moroccan position supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to the establishment of an independent State within the 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital, thus guaranteeing peace and stability in the region.

He highlighted HM the King’s initiatives to send dozens of tons of medical and food aid, stressing that these large-scale humanitarian operations for Palestinians confirm the concrete commitment and continued solicitude with which the Sovereign, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, supports the Palestinian cause.

Thus, Morocco opposes all unilateral actions likely to fuel extremism and violence in the region, the diplomat said, adding that the Kingdom always positions itself as a constructive stakeholder in all efforts to establish a comprehensive and just peace guaranteeing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, in line with the references agreed regionally and internationally.
