Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI, has always been committed to promoting efficient, safe and sustainable maritime mobility, Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh said on Monday in Marrakech.

In a address delivered on his behalf by the Ministry’s Secretary General, Khalid Cherkaoui, at the opening ceremony of the 48th Annual Interferry Conference, Kayouh reiterated the Kingdom’s constant commitment to supporting international efforts to strengthen maritime safety.

After pointing out that the ferry industry plays a crucial part in global maritime transport, the Minister emphasized that Morocco, as a gateway to Africa, “aspires to be a development model in the maritime transport sector, particularly that of ferries.”

Kayouh also touched on the environmental challenges posed by shipping, stressing that the global maritime community has a key role to play in reducing the carbon footprint of shipping and decarbonizing the sector.

In this context, he stressed that Morocco, through its international commitments and national plans, has taken ambitious measures to encourage the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable maritime solutions.

The Minister also recalled that the Kingdom has invested heavily in the development of maritime infrastructure in recent years, explaining that Moroccan ports, including Tanger-Med, one of the largest in Africa and the Mediterranean basin, bear witness to the strategic position the Kingdom aims to occupy on the world stage.

He went on to say that “Morocco has implemented in-depth reforms to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of its ports, while ensuring that the environment’s sustainability and protection are at the heart of its concerns.” He emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration with international operators to further improve quality, safety and service standards in this sector.

This world-class event, which runs until October 30, is an important opportunity to strengthen Morocco’s position in the shipping industry, particularly in the ferry sector.

This year, special attention will be paid to maritime safety in Africa, with a seminar dedicated to this topic on October 30, 2024, to exchange experiences and best practices and build solutions adapted to the specific challenges facing the ferry industry.
