Maritime traffic between Spanish ports and Morocco’s Tangier Med and Tangier City ports has been disrupted by severe weather conditions in the Mediterranean, with officials warning that the situation could worsen in the coming hours, according to sources cited by Hespress.
The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said maritime traffic between Morocco and Spain is expected to be completely suspended from Friday evening until Sunday morning.
The disruptions have already been felt on the Tangier City–Tarifa route, where more than half of the scheduled crossings were canceled Friday.
Three ships were reported to be heading to Spain Friday, with the last departure scheduled for 5 p.m. At the same time, Tangier City port was expected to receive one vessel from Tarifa, though that arrival is now considered at risk of cancellation.
Weather forecasts indicate that wave heights could reach six meters starting Friday evening, a development that is expected to halt ferry traffic between Morocco and Spain Friday night and throughout Saturday.
The southern Spanish ports and Tangier Med are also experiencing significant disruption due to rough seas, according to the same sources.
However, the sources noted that Tangier Med is not expected to suspend operations completely until 8 p.m. Friday, and that sailing decisions depend on specific navigation criteria related to ship size and capacity.
Reaching wave heights of six meters or more presents a major challenge for vessels and crews, the sources added, noting that the port’s activity has been negatively affected compared with normal operations.
