A recent report from the Middle East Institute has highlighted Morocco’s substantial potential in renewable energy technology, emphasizing the country’s development of a dynamic ecosystem that integrates this sector into its national economy.

The report notes that Morocco has been ranked as one of the world’s most attractive markets for renewable energy investment. In 2023, it secured the second position globally, following Denmark, and surpassed all countries in the MENA region that did not appear in the top ten.

According to the report, there is a significant link between the expansion of the renewable energy sector and the increase in job opportunities for women and youth. It calls for continued support for green energy initiatives and innovation within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Michael Tanchum, the report’s author, stated that sustainable development within Morocco’s new development model is evident in the green energy sector, suggesting that the rise of startups could create vital employment opportunities, especially in rural areas.

The report emphasizes the necessity for tailored training programs to enhance technical and entrepreneurial skills for young people and women, underlining the role of renewable energy in fostering entrepreneurship.

It also addresses the need for more efforts to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to participate in renewable energy projects, particularly due to some firms’ hesitance stemming from previous technical difficulties.

Furthermore, the report highlights the potential for renewable energy to support desalination plants and produce green fertilizers, which could significantly improve productivity in small farms, an essential sector for Morocco.

In conclusion, the report asserts that the success of the Green Generation Strategy, which aims to uplift 400,000 agricultural families to the middle class, largely depends on the expansion of renewable energy production to ensure access to water and green ammonia fertilizers.
