Morocco’s renewable energy capacity is set to make up 56% of the national electricity mix by 2027, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, surpassing the country’s initial 52% target set for 2030.

Installed renewable capacity reached 4,607 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2023, representing over 41% of Morocco’s electricity mix, the ministry pointed out in its latest report on public institutions and enterprises, accompanying the 2025 Draft Finance Bill.

This achievement narrowly missed the 2020 target of 42%, but underscores a notable acceleration in the renewable sector, supported by solar (827 MW), wind (2,010 MW), and hydroelectric (1,770 MW) projects, the same source noted, adding that major private sector developments in 2023, including the Nassim Boujdour (300 MW) and Aftissat 2 (200 MW) projects, added 500 MW to the grid.

By year-end, an additional 370 MW in wind energy will be added, spearheaded by Koudia Al Baida (100 MW) and Jbel Lahdid (200 MW) repowering projects. This will bring total renewable capacity to 4,977 MW, covering 45% of the national electricity.

The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has an ambitious slate of projects for the 2023–2027 period, aiming to add another 4,028 MW of renewable capacity. This includes 333 MW from private investments under Law 13-09, governing renewable energy production and distribution. The planned expansion represents a capital investment of over MAD 47 billion ($4.5 billion).

MASEN projects nearly MAD 2.8 billion in revenues for 2024, marking a 74% increase. However, the agency faces ongoing financial challenges, forecasting a net loss of MAD 1.03 billion and a 23% rise in debt to MAD 20.8 billion.
