German police recently shut down a pizzeria in Düsseldorf that allegedly offered cocaine alongside its menu, particularly when customers requested item number 40. “That was one of our best-selling pizzas,” said criminal director Michael Graf von Moltke.
The investigation began in March after food inspectors flagged suspicious activity. Surveillance revealed the connection between the popular pizza and drug sales. When police approached the pizzeria manager’s apartment, he reportedly discarded a bag of drugs, which landed directly in their hands.
The seizure included 1.6 kg of cocaine, 400 g of cannabis, and €268,000 (about $290,000) in cash. Although the 36-year-old manager was briefly detained, he quickly reopened the business and resumed selling the notorious pizza with its illicit side order.
This led investigators to trace the drug supply chain, culminating in a raid involving around 150 officers. They dismantled a larger drug operation, arresting three suspects—including a 22-year-old leader—and raiding 12 other locations.
During the operations, police discovered two cannabis plantations in nearby Mönchengladbach and Solingen, along with weapons, cash, and luxury watches. The pizzeria manager was later arrested while attempting to flee abroad and remains in custody.
