The National Coordination of Students, Graduates, and Nurses from the Higher Institutes of Nursing Professions and Health Technologies in Morocco has announced a series of protests and marches scheduled from October 9 to 11.

Participants will don black armbands to symbolize their dissent. This mobilization arises in response to what they describe as “arbitrary decisions” made by authorities concerning the appointment of local government employees for training at these institutes without meeting essential qualifications, coupled with a lack of transparency regarding training durations.

Several months ago, the Ministry of interior issued a memorandum to the heads of local authorities across various regions and provinces of Morocco instructing them to appoint municipal employees for training in nursing professions and health technologies to address the public health workforce shortage by transforming these employees into qualified nurses and healthcare professionals.

The directives include compiling lists of employees interested in specialized training in three areas: multi-task nursing, family and community health nursing, and environmental health technologies.

Eligible local government employees holding a high school diploma can now change their career paths by enrolling in essential and ongoing training programs, fostering development and research in nursing and health technologies.

In response, the nursing coordination will also stage nationwide protest set for Friday, October 25 and boycott theoretical classes and clinical training, along with a nighttime sit-in.

The National Coordination accused the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of exploiting students to fill the shortage of nursing staff and health technicians without financial compensation.

They criticised what they described as the “deterioration of the infrastructure of training institutes”, saying that they were no longer able to accommodate the steady increase in the number of students with the expansion of specializations.

Additionally, the coordination has expressed strong opposition to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection’s plans to implement contract-based recruitment for upcoming job competitions starting next year.
