Moroccan head coach Walid Regragui on Thursday emphasized that hard work and consistency are the primary factors in selecting players for the country’s soccer team. Speaking at a press conference held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Regragui addressed the upcoming double-header against the Central African Republic as part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
“We have a top-tier squad, with players competing in some of the world’s most prestigious leagues. Many of them play in the Champions League, which means they must perform at a high level to make the national team,” Regragui stated. Morocco is set to face the Central African Republic on October 12 and 15 at the Stade d’Honneur in Oujda, in the third and fourth rounds of the qualifiers.
Regragui was clear that merit, not league affiliation, determines selection. “The best players are chosen, and there’s no difference between those playing domestically and those abroad. Whoever earns their place through performance will be part of the national squad,” he added.
Discussing his squad choices, Regragui acknowledged the challenge of maintaining balance and cohesion within the team, particularly when injuries affect key players. “Finding the ideal starting eleven is not easy due to constraints like injuries,” he noted. The absence of star players Hakim Ziyech and Brahim Diaz due to injury, however, opens up opportunities for others. “It allows new players to gain experience and contribute to the future of the team,” he said.
The coach highlighted the importance of tactical flexibility. “The key is to have players capable of adapting to different styles of play,” Regragui explained, adding that the national team continues to grow through its competitive matches.
Regragui also praised the dedication of players to representing Morocco, pointing out that the national team remains open to new talent. “The door to the national team is open to everyone, but competition is fierce in certain positions. It’s crucial to work hard to earn a place,” he concluded.
