The Algerian government announced on Thursday the immediate reinstatement of the visa system for all foreign nationals holding Moroccan passports, according to local media.

“The Algerian government has decided to immediately reintroduce the visa requirement for all foreign nationals holding Moroccan passports,” the sources said.

“Algeria, which has always adhered to the values of solidarity and the preservation of the human and family ties that unite the Algerian and Moroccan peoples, has avoided, since announcing its decision to sever diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Morocco in August 2021, compromising the free and fluid movement of people,” the sources attributed the announcement to a statement by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry accused Morocco, according to the communiqué, of “exploiting the absence of visas between the two countries, engaging in various acts that affect Algeria’s stability and national security, especially multiple networks of organized crime, drug and human trafficking, smuggling, illegal immigration and espionage, as well as the deployment of Zionist intelligence elements with Moroccan passports to freely enter the national territory.”

“These behaviors constitute a direct threat to the country’s security and impose strict control of entry and residence on the national territory at all border points,” the statement said, adding that ”Morocco bears sole responsibility for the current course of the deterioration of bilateral relations.”
