Morocco has achieved a milestone in its tourism sector, recording an influx of approximately 10 million tourists by the end of July, a substantial 15% increase compared to last year.

July alone witnessed an even more impressive surge, with 2.6 million tourists visiting the country, a 20% rise from the previous year.

These figures, released by the Directorate of Financial Studies and Forecasts, have garnered praise from industry professionals who view this growth as a positive indicator, signaling a bright future for Morocco’s tourism sector.

To sustain this momentum, experts advocate for continued marketing efforts in both traditional and emerging markets and strategic partnerships with airlines.

Morocco’s tourism sector is poised for further expansion. With an estimated financial value of 6.1 billion dirhams, the country aims to solidify its position as a global tourism destination. The strategic roadmap for the sector sets ambitious targets, aiming to attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026 and 26 million by 2030.

While the overall trend is encouraging, there is a need to ensure that all components of the tourism industry benefit equally, including addressing disparities in revenue generation across different regions of the Kingdom.

Industry experts weigh in

Jamal El Saadi, a prominent figure in the tourism sector, emphasized the importance of focusing on attracting a larger number of foreign tourists, particularly from traditional and emerging markets.

He highlighted the successful targeting of the Canadian and Brazilian markets and urged for similar efforts in the traditional market, given its proximity and lower tourism costs.

Zubeir Bouhout, an expert in the tourism sector, noted that the increase in tourist arrivals is crucial for strengthening Morocco’s balance of payments and stressed the need to increase overnight stays in relation to the number of visitors.

Mohamed Benmansour, president of the National Federation of Tourist Transport, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits of the tourism boom are distributed equitably among all industry players and highlighted the need for strategies that create profitability for everyone, particularly in sectors like tourist transport.
