Two weeks after the transfer of six individuals, the Zouj Beghal border crossing between Morocco and Algeria was exceptionally opened on Thursday to facilitate the handover of 16 Moroccans who had been detained in Algerian prisons.
The Association for the Assistance of Migrants in Difficult Situations, a human rights organization monitoring detainees in Algeria, reported that the transfer was conducted using a valid passport and a traffic document.
According to a statement received by Hespress, the 16 individuals, from cities including Oujda, Fes, Tangier, Casablanca, Taza, Tetouan, Midelt, Khouribga, Kenitra, and Damnat, had completed their sentences in various Algerian prisons, primarily in the Tlemcen region.
The association confirmed that it is actively monitoring numerous cases involving detainees still in administrative detention, awaiting deportation, as well as pre-trial detainees. The process is being impeded by “several technical and procedural difficulties,” which the organization is working to address.
The organization also noted that it currently manages more than 330 detainee files and six deceased individuals awaiting return to their families. The association has previously facilitated the return of other bodies to families for burial after handling judicial and administrative procedures.
Since January 17, a total of 69 Moroccans have been handed over by Algerian authorities to their Moroccan counterparts, including the most recent group of 16.
