Oued Merzeg beach, nestled in Dar Bouazza commune, faced a troubling incident of temporary sewage contamination over the weekend, sparking alarm among beachgoers and environmental advocates alike.

The contamination, characterized by green, murky water washing ashore alongside usual debris, raised immediate concerns about the safety of the beach.

Some visitors, unaware of the pollution issue, expressed shock and disappointment. One tourist, speaking to Assabah, Morocco’s leading daily, lamented, “This is my first time in Morocco, and I’m swimming in its beaches for the first time. Unfortunately, it might also be my last.”

Lydec, the local water management company, swiftly responded to the situation upon discovery, working tirelessly for over 12 hours to halt the discharge and mitigate potential harm, as stated in their recent press release. Thankfully, the pollution threat has been contained.

According to Lydec, the contamination originated from illicit connections to the rainwater drainage system. This incident, however, sheds light on ongoing challenges with beach water quality across Casablanca.

Oued Merzeg Beach has been deemed unsafe for swimming due to previous wastewater issues from other sources. Despite these known risks, many beachgoers remain unaware of the hazards, exacerbated by inadequate signage and insufficient public awareness campaigns.

Environmental organizations have voiced serious concerns over the health risks associated with swimming in polluted waters, urging authorities to adopt stricter measures against polluters and enhance public education on water quality.

This summer, the Greater Casablanca region has identified seven beaches, including Oued Merzeg, as unsuitable for swimming due to failing microbiological water quality standards. The affected beaches are Manesmane, two Zenata beaches, Nahla, Chahdia, David, and Oued Merzeg.

“This issue isn’t new,” remarked the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, noting that these beaches have consistently exceeded safe pollution limits. The primary challenge lies in untreated sewage overflowing from overloaded drains directly into the sea.

Despite these warnings, the allure of Casablanca’s coastline is growing as scorching summer temperatures continue to draw crowds. However, the combination of high visitor numbers, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and the effects of climate change continues to compromise the condition of these beaches.
