A joint operation by the National Police and the Civil Guard recovered 15 stolen vehicles, most from France, Germany, and Italy.

The operation dealt a blow to a criminal organization specializing in stealing vehicles from Europe and exporting them to Morocco for black market sales.

The stolen vehicles were intercepted at the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa as they attempted to cross the Strait of Gibraltar towards Morocco.

The thieves employed a method known as “triangulation,” which involves stealing rented, leased, or financed vehicles. They then masked the true ownership through a series of fraudulent transfers, making tracking the cars’ origins difficult.

The stolen vehicles were destined for the African black market, highlighting the international reach of this criminal network.

The rapid response of European cooperation mechanisms was crucial in this case, as many rightful owners were unaware of their vehicles’ locations.

The sting operation also netted a high-value vehicle worth nearly €300,000. This particular car was connected to a Dutch money laundering investigation, and its intended export outside Europe further exposes the organization’s diverse criminal activities.

Law enforcement apprehended 13 individuals in connection with the stolen vehicle ring. Charges include receiving stolen goods and document falsification, particularly in cases where vehicle identification numbers or accompanying paperwork were tampered with.

The detainees and related proceedings are now under judicial review.

Authorities also conducted preventative checks on five additional high-end vehicles. These checks aimed to verify ownership, legal status, and identify any discrepancies that could indicate criminal activity.

The recovered vehicles will be returned to their rightful owners in their respective European countries.

This takedown of a stolen vehicle ring is not an isolated incident. Back in April, Moroccan authorities in Nador dismantled a similar operation. Their operation targeted a criminal network involved in international car theft, forgery, and the use of forged documents.

The sting, conducted in rural areas surrounding Nador, Driouch, and Ben Tayeb, led to the arrest of sixteen individuals suspected of creating fake documents, vehicle identification numbers, and license plates.

Authorities also searched warehouses used by the suspects, seizing a significant haul. This included 69 vehicles of various makes and models, along with a trove of counterfeit license plates, car parts, engines, keys, and vehicle documents.
