Two female elephants, Jana and Praya, with a history of behavioral issues stemming from their lengthy circus careers, will be relocated to the Ain Sebaa Park in Morocco on July 22nd.
The park will provide the elephants with a more spacious and nurturing environment to spend their remaining years.
“This is an opportunity that came up for these old female elephants,” commented Claire Gilissen, spokesperson for the Pairi Daiza park near Mons in Belgium, where the two elephants from Amiens have been cared for since 2017.
The same source added that “the living conditions in the Paira Daiza park, which has welcomed them since their departure from Picardy, are no longer suitable for these 47-year-old ladies.
“They need more heat like everyone else, especially when they are old like them,” explained Gilissen further.
The two elephants, as mentioned the same source, trembled constantly and could not mix with the other Belgian groups. They were administered plant-based supplements to address behavioral problems.
While these supplements have significantly improved their condition, Gilissen anticipates a continued need for increased care and attention as the elephants age.
In this regard, extensive measures have been implemented to guarantee the comfort of the elephants during their transportation, according to France 3.
Given their advanced age, Jana and Praya underwent rigorous medical examinations to confirm their suitability for the journey. The spokesperson for the Belgian zoo has confirmed that both elephants passed these assessments with “flying colors.”
To mitigate stress, the same source highlighted that the elephants are undergoing daily training to acclimate them to their transport crates. It added that caregivers will accompany them throughout the journey to provide reassurance.
The French media outlet revealed that a care specialist has already arrived at the destination to verify that the facilities meet the elephants’ requirements.
Also, the head veterinarian from Pairi Daiza will share detailed medical and behavioral guidelines with the Moroccan team.
The said source concluded that Belgian and Moroccan caregivers will maintain regular communication for several months following the relocation to ensure a smooth transition.
