A local court in Essaouira has ordered a man to pay 3,000 dirhams in damages after finding him responsible for deliberately injuring a donkey with an axe, in a March incident that drew animal welfare scrutiny.
The ruling, issued by the proximity court at the Essaouira Court of First Instance, held the defendant liable for physical harm to the animal and financial loss to its owner, while rejecting additional claims.
The case dates to March 2026 in Douar Ait Ben Taleb, where the animal entered private land while fleeing dogs, according to the complaint. The defendant struck it with a sharp tool, causing severe injuries to a hind leg, the filing said.
A veterinary report confirmed two traumatic wounds to the back and hindquarters consistent with a sharp object. A clinical exam on March 12 recorded elevated heart rate at 76 beats per minute and acute pain requiring intensive treatment.
Association Arham for Animal Welfare and Environmental Protection said it supported the owner in documenting injuries and pursuing legal action. The group said it would continue the case on appeal to reinforce enforcement of animal protection provisions under Moroccan law.
