Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mehdi Bensaid criticized the negative aspects of Morocco’s multiplicity of press institutions, especially at the “content quality” level, saying that today’s goal is to “achieve quality over equality.”
Bensaid said in an opening speech at the “National Symposium on the National Media Landscape: 25 Years of Achievements and Challenges,” organized by the Higher Institute of Information and Communication, that “even in countries with long-standing democracies, there are not a large number of media sites in a region whose population does not exceed one million people.”
He added, “I do not want my words to be understood as meaning that the ministry or the government is against democracy, freedom of expression, and pluralism. On the contrary, we want a strong media scene in terms of content, work methods, and economic sustainability.”
The government official stressed that “the national media scene, as we recall the results of 25 years, we want it to be strong, and we have no problem criticizing public policies or the government. On the contrary, this is the work of the press, and we all remember how the press used to play a fundamental role at the level of public debates, and contribute to creating that debate between public opinion and the political arena.”
Bensaid pointed out that the challenges facing the media sector in the country, “we worked to confront them within the framework of a second phase of the development of the audiovisual scene; first by issuing a new decree for public support that contributes to adopting a new model for media enterprise and ending the current [chaos] that the media is experiencing.”
