The Northern Observatory for Human Rights (ONDH) in Morocco is raising concerns about a rise in dangerous migration attempts during the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday and summer months.

Head of the Observatory, Mohamed Benaissa, said that these festive periods are often seen as opportunities for migrants to attempt hazardous swimming crossings to reach the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

Benaissa pointed to the tragic events of March and April, when 14 migrants died while trying to reach the autonomous cities. He further added that most migrants, including minors, still prefer the risky swimming route despite the dangers.

“The majority of irregular migrants, including minors, continue to prefer to reach Ceuta by swimming,” Benaissa said.

During that same period, some 1,000 migrants were registered, mainly Moroccans, who managed to reach Ceuta and Melilla, but at least 18 people, all young, are still missing in the Mediterranean.

The Observatory has documented a worrying increase in crossing attempts in recent months, with a daily average of 120 attempts, 20% higher compared to January and February.

This rise is particularly concerning among unaccompanied minors attempting the treacherous swim from Castillejos to Ceuta, known for strong currents and rocky shores.

Benaissa emphasized a shift in migration patterns, moving from larger groups to individuals. While this may be cheaper, it exposes migrants to greater risks, especially when swimming.

The head of the NGO noted a disturbing trend of underage women now attempting the crossings, further increasing their vulnerability.

Favorable weather conditions and calmer seas since January have contributed to the surge in swimming attempts.

However, Benaissa expressed concern that increased tourist activity during the summer will complicate surveillance by authorities, potentially leading to migrants taking even more risks to reach the enclaves.

The Observatory concludes that the shift towards individual and more dangerous migration methods is a worrying trend. They urge authorities and the international community to address these dangerous routes and prioritize the lives of migrants.
