Morocco to boosts national defense with new military industry zones
Sunday 2 June 2024 - 23:29

Morocco has authorized the creation of two military industry zones for the development and production of military equipment in a move towards bolstering its national defense.

Announced by the Moroccan Royal Cabinet following a Council of Ministers meeting, these zones will focus on attracting investments and developing domestic capabilities for producing weapons and ammunition.

While the exact locations and construction timelines for these “industrial acceleration platforms” remain undisclosed, the move signals Morocco’s strategic intent to strengthen its military self-reliance in the face of a complex global security landscape.

This initiative coincides with a broader push by King Mohamed VI to modernize and adapt the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).

In a recent directive issued on the 68th anniversary of the FAR’s creation, the King emphasized the need to adjust to evolving global tensions and shifting geopolitical alliances.

The king said that it’s paramount to review security and defense concepts, as well as revamp military training programs, to effectively address emerging threats.

The royal directive called for a two-pronged approach to enhance the FAR’s capabilities.  First, it prioritizes technical modernization through the acquisition of advanced equipment.

Second, it emphasizes the importance of personnel training, ensuring troops remain operationally prepared at all times.

The directive stressed the need for a complete overhaul of training programs to integrate cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.

In this context, Morocco made a landmark deal to purchase 131 fourth-generation F-16 fighter jets from the U.S. after the conclusion of the 20th iteration of the African Lion military exercises.

This acquisition, the largest arms deal in Moroccan history, follows a visit by a high-level American delegation comprising senior defense officials to discuss strengthening military cooperation between Rabat and Washington.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), a division of the U.S. Department of Defense, had already announced the commencement of the manufacturing process for the F-16s, also known as “Vipers,” destined for Morocco.

Military analysts view Morocco’s purchase of this new generation of F-16s as a significant step towards bolstering its defensive and offensive capabilities.
