In an attempt to enhance safety and pedestrian accessibility, Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility approved a contract valued at €3.55 million for the improvement of the road leading to the Ceuta-Morocco border crossing.
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, citing the statement released by the Delegation of the Government, the current section of the road leading to the Ceuta-Morocco border crossing presents opportunities for improvement.
The same source mentioned that the high volume of traffic—which exceeds 13,200 vehicles per day—most of which is through traffic as it is a crossing section, necessitates these enhancements.
It added that this traffic volume surges significantly during the summer due to the additional movement generated by Operation Marhaba, also known as Paso del Estrecho (OPE), a border crossing operation between Spain and Morocco.
The news agency emphasized that the congestion caused by border procedures can lead to gridlock on this road and others in the city.
For this reason, the project is expected to widen this section to include two lanes in the direction of the border and one lane in the opposite direction, all 3 meters wide.
The same source stated that this initiative seeks to foster improved mobility for pedestrians and cyclists, alongside other emerging forms of transportation. It additionally aims to lower the amount of space allocated to automobiles and encourage a reduction in their speed.
The project includes the creation of sidewalks ranging from 1.5 to 2 meters wide on both sides of the road and the installation of street furniture.
It also involves, according to the same source, constructing ramps and steps for access to buildings and rehabilitating the road surface, among other improvements.
