The United Kingdom has reduced its Russian fertilizer imports by a whopping 80% since last year, turning instead to Morocco among other phosphate-rich nations.
In response to a parliamentary question from Conservative MP Alyssa Cairns in the House of Commons about the sanctioned Russian good, the UK government’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade revealed that London is importing fertilizers from Morocco, Egypt, Israel, the United States, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Canada, Greece and Nigeria.
The UK’s fertilizer imports value between March 2023 and February this year grew significantly from the diversification.
The ministry explained that the proportion of imports from these countries accounted for about 93% of the total increase in British imports during this period.
The British government imposed in March 2022 an additional 35% tariff on fertilizer imports from Moscow, except for urea, which is subject to a 6% tariff.
London has also imposed a total ban on certain types of fertilizer from the country, still at war with Ukraine.
The Secretary of State for Business and Trade confirmed that starting last year, UK fertilizer imports from Russia began to decline due to these tariffs and Western economic sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of its war against Kiev, stressing: “London will continue to lobby and coordinate with our international partners to put pressure on the Moscow to end this war.”
