Around 60 students from Hamman Elfatouaki High School in Casablanca were hospitalized today after experiencing respiratory difficulties.

The students were rushed to the emergency room at Mohammed V Hospital in the Mohammadi district after complaining of shortness of breath and other suffocation symptoms. Medical personnel treated some of the students, who were released this afternoon.18 students remain under observation.

The cause of the incident remains unknown, but,  student family members suspect a gas leak from a nearby factory.

A student’s father who spoke to Hespress reported his daughter noticed a gas odor in recent days and was experiencing breathing problems. He further stated that the school principal was informed about the suspected gas leak.

The head of the parents’ association at a neighboring school confirmed that the school administration had previously been notified about student complaints about a gas smell.

An investigation is underway by the Ain Sebaa prefecture in Mohammadi to determine the cause of the incident
