After a brief period of stability, tomato prices in Morocco have risen sharply, reaching around 14 dirhams per kilo in some cities like Casablanca. On May 8, 2024, the minimum and maximum prices of tomatoes in Casablanca increased by 0.80 and 2.80 dirhams per kilo, respectively, with prices ranging from 8.95 to 13.95 dirhams per kilo.
The price of a box of tomatoes can even reach 250 dirhams. Fruit and vegetable producers attribute this trend to various factors, including weather conditions, supply and demand, production and transport costs, as well as import and export policies.
Limited production and insufficient quantities available on the market are also cited as contributing to the price hike. Meanwhile, prices for other fruits like bananas, apples, and oranges remained unchanged from the previous week.
