Informed Mauritanian sources report that a number of Mauritanian and Sahraoui illegal gold miners were shot by members of the Algerian army near the “Giouarat” region, which is approximately 60 km from the Mauritanian “Chekarat” region, which is open to Mauritanian miners, near Mauritanian military.
The sources indicated, in an interview with Hespress, that “gold miners have been subjected to attacks for more than two weeks by Algerian forces, who use real bullets to chase them at the border,” adding that “shrapnel from an artillery shell fell last weekend near a car near one miner, while the accident did not result in any injuries.”
The sources, who provided Hespress with video clips documenting this bombing, explained that “Algerian authorities confiscated more than 12 four-wheel-drive vehicles, most of which belonged to Sahraoui miners from the Tindouf camps. They also arrested a number of them, including Mauritanian nationals, who were detained in the local prison in the Algerian state of Tindouf.”
