A recent European study has revealed a shocking statistic: over 51,000 unaccompanied minors have disappeared in EU countries between 2021 and 2023.

The study, conducted by the organization Lost In Europe in partnership with several media outlets, highlights the vulnerability of these young migrants, many of whom originate from countries like Afghanistan, Algeria, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Morocco.

Despite efforts to monitor their movements, a significant number of children vanish during their journey through Europe, leaving them at risk of exploitation and abuse by criminal networks. Researchers warn that the actual number of disappearances may be even higher than reported, as only 13 out of 31 governments provided specific data.

Italy has the highest number of missing minors at 22,899, followed by Austria with 20,077, Belgium with 2,241, and Germany with 2,005. Austria’s Interior Ministry attributes the high figures to the large influx of migrants using the Balkan route, often viewing Austria as a transit country. Shockingly, over 80% of unaccompanied minors registered in Austria in 2022 disappeared before undergoing asylum procedures or age verification.
