Karima Benyaich, Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, expressed regret over how some parties exploit Moroccan immigrants during elections.
While acknowledging occasional problems within such a large population, the minister stressed in an interview with the Spanish agency EFE that these issues are not based on religion or ethnicity but on individual actions.
She emphasized that the Moroccan community in Spain is well-integrated, and using them to portray a negative image is unfair.
Moroccans represented 9.66% of hate victims of foreign nationality in Spain by the end of 2021, according to a report published by the Spanish Interior Ministry on the evolution of hate crimes in the country.
Benyaich also addressed the misconception that Morocco is solely associated with irregular immigration, which she said “does not coincide with reality.”
Despite these concerns, the Ambassador highlighted the strong relationship between Spain and Morocco, as neighbors and friends with a rich shared history and strategic geographic location.
She pointed to the large Moroccan community in Spain as evidence of the close ties, emphasizing their positive contributions to the Spanish economy and society.
Benyaich called for continued collaboration between the two countries to ensure peace and prosperity in the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions.
