At a recent high-level event in Vienna, Morocco’s Ambassador in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane said that Morocco seized over 8 million tablets, including ecstasy and other psychoactive substances, between 2019 and 2023.

The meeting, held as part of the 67th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) taking place from the 14 to 22 March, focused on the global challenge of synthetic drugs and their precursors.

Farhane brought to light Morocco’s efforts to combat trafficking in psychotropic and psychoactive substances, acknowledging the significant challenges the country faces.

Farhane detailed Morocco’s national strategy for preventing and managing addictive disorders, emphasizing both prevention and law enforcement efforts.

The diplomat praised the fruitful cooperation between Morocco and international partners, citing a specific instance where US intelligence led to the seizure of nearly half a million synthetic opioid tablets in Tangiers in 2021.

The rise in production, trafficking, and use of synthetic drugs globally was a major concern at the meeting.

Farhane welcomed the launch of the Global Coalition to Combat Synthetic Drug Threats, highlighting its potential for collaboration. As a member, Morocco believes collective action is crucial to protect public well-being and societal prosperity.

Farhane stressed the need for strong international cooperation, calling for synergy and collaboration between the Coalition, the CND, and other UN bodies.

The ambassador also advocated for a renewed global consensus on drug-related issues, emphasizing evidence-based approaches and considering the social and technical aspects of the problem beyond political agendas.

Following the World Health Organization’s recommendation on medical cannabis, Morocco legalized its use for scientific and medical purposes through Law 13-21 in 2021.

A dedicated agency oversees and regulates this sector, aiming to reduce illicit cannabis supply, promote research and development of related products, and involve communities in the process.

Farhane concluded by showcasing Morocco’s significant seizures of illicit substances from 2019 to 2023, including cannabis resin, herb, cocaine, heroin, and psychotropic tablets. This demonstrates Morocco’s active role in the global fight against drug trafficking.
