No tsunami threat after Atlantic earthquake, Moroccan Geophysics Institute says

Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics (ING) has denied reports of a tsunami near Agadir following a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in the mid-Atlantic.

Nasser Jabour, director of the ING, confirmed the earthquake but assured the public it had “no impact on Morocco” and was not strong enough to be felt. He clarified that any warnings of a tsunami were quickly canceled.

Jabour addressed social media claims of a “mini-tsunami,” attributing recent high waves to standard weather patterns causing rough seas, not an earthquake or tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake struck Thursday evening at a depth of 10 kilometers.
