In a recent press release, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs expressed its “profound disappointment” over the dissemination of incorrect information by certain media outlets concerning the commencement of Ramadan. The ministry emphasized the importance of relying on official announcements from the Maghreb Arab Press Agency (MAP) and the Société Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision (SNRT, National Society of Broadcasting and Television).

The ministry’s statement highlighted an incident where some media prematurely published a fabricated statement attributed to the ministry regarding the start of the holy month. This action was met with strong disapproval and was described as a desperate attempt to mislead the public.

The ministry further explained that it is committed to promptly informing the public about the sighting of the lunar crescent. This process is particularly crucial when the crescent is not visible in the northern regions, as was the case on the evening in question, when the authentic announcement was made at 7:37 p.m., shortly followed by the official statement from MAP.

In light of these events, the ministry urges all media to exercise due diligence and patience, reserving such announcements for the authorized agencies. The ministry’s advisory extends to all, highlighting the necessity of waiting for the genuine announcement from either MAP or SNRT. The statement also pointed out that some websites had erroneously reported the false announcement, mistakenly attributing it to MAP ahead of time.
