In a testament to the enduring cultural connections between Morocco and the European Union (EU), the 30th edition of the European Film Weeks was inaugurated on Friday, as announced by Patricia Llombart Cussac, the EU Ambassador to Morocco.

The event, which commenced in 1991, signifies Morocco’s and the EU’s growing commitment towards continued collaboration in the cultural realm. Llombart Cussac underscored the cultural project’s significance and highlighted its unique emphasis on fostering cooperation. This year’s edition, she noted, stands out for its pronounced female presence in both directing and acting roles, with more than half of the screenings directed by women.

The ambassador also shed light on the broader collaborative initiatives between Morocco and the EU. She mentioned that Rabat is set to host the Jazz au Chellah Festival and emphasized a joint program launched this year, focusing on Cultural and Creative Industries. This program is being undertaken in close partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication.

Llombart Cussac expressed enthusiasm for ongoing collaborations with Moroccan associations, particularly the Ali Zaoua Foundation and the Hiba Foundation. These collaborations aim to nurture talents in cinema, arts, and culture, with a keen focus on contributing to development efforts and promoting youth employment.

Attracting an annual audience of nearly 12,000 spectators, the European Film Weeks have become a symbol of excellence in European, Moroccan, and Mediterranean art and culture.

The event provides a unique platform for promoting and strengthening intercultural dialogue through film screenings, interactions between Moroccan and European filmmakers, and workshops tailored for young enthusiasts keen on exploring careers in the cinematic world.

The 30th edition boasts a diverse lineup of films, including notable titles such as “Anatomy of a Fall” (France), “The Chimera” (Italy), “Club Zero” (Austria, Germany, France, UK, Denmark), “Explanation for Everything” (Hungary, Slovakia), “Dead Leaves” (Finland), “Teachers’ Room” (Germany), “20,000 Species of Bees” (Spain), and “Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Currents” (Belgium, France).

Short film enthusiasts are in for a treat with offerings like “Ayyur” (Morocco), “What If the Sun Dived into the Ocean of Clouds” (Lebanon), and “On My Father’s Grave” (Morocco).

Since 1991, the European Film Weeks have been a collaborative effort by the European Union in Morocco, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the Moroccan Cinematographic Center, the Hiba Foundation, and the Marrakech School of Visual Arts.
