Morocco’s approach to sustainable and human development in Africa as well as to leading the transformation of food systems was highlighted in London.

In collaboration with SOAS University of London, Morocco’s Embassy in the United Kingdom brought together academics, diplomats, policy-makers and students for a conference on Wednesday evening on the theme “African Tapestry: Climate, Crops, and Culture – A Moroccan Perspective.” The event focused on Africa as a continent of solutions, and on the important role played by Morocco, under the enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI, is the continent’s development.

The first panel saw high-level participation, including representatives from OCP Africa, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), the World Food Program, and professors from SOAS. The panelists discussed the challenges related to food security and climate change in Africa. The discussion focused on Morocco’s efforts to address these challenges.

The experts praised the role of OCP Africa and UM6P in developing appropriate and innovative solutions for African agriculture.

The panelists pointed out that the continent has significant natural and human resources, and recalled that Morocco has launched the African Agriculture Adaptation (AAA) initiative to help adapt agriculture and finance it, as well as the Kingdom’s efforts to develop green energy.

The human dimension was at the heart of the second panel, which focused on ways to unlock Africa’s potential by steering clear of ethnic divides to appreciate the diversity of cultures and the plurality of viewpoints that can come together to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

A conversation between the conference’s guest of honor, the Secretary General of the Rabita Mohammadia des Oulémas, Ahmed Abbadi, and the President of SOAS, Zeinab Badawi, highlighted the unique example of Morocco, a Kingdom at the crossroads of a myriad of civilizations that has always been a land of harmony, tolerance and peace.

Drawing on the Kingdom’s history, where diversity and coexistence are the keywords, Abbadi stressed the need to foster trust and a culture of living together to unleash Africa’s full potential. “We must learn to transcend ourselves and look to ourselves and our planet globally. We must draw on our love of life to build real solutions,” he said.

The two panelists also underlined the determination of Morocco, a country firmly rooted in its continent, to pursue its commitment to fostering a dialogue that embraces both multi-religious and cultural perspectives, in favor of strengthened African unity, recognizing that this is a fundamental element in fully unleashing the continent’s potential.
