British MP: Morocco has established itself as nation of vision, stability & opportunity

Morocco has emerged as a leading regional power thanks to a long-term strategic vision pursued under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, British Member of Parliament Joe Powell said.

Morocco has become an indispensable strategic partner for the United Kingdom and a prime destination for international investment, the Labour MP said in an interview with MAP on the occasion of Throne Day, commending the Kingdom’s far-reaching economic, social, and infrastructure transformation.

“I think there are tremendous opportunities, and it is truly impressive to see the progress that has been made,” said Powell, who also serves as co-chair of Labour Friends of Morocco, a group dedicated to strengthening ties between Morocco and the United Kingdom.

According to the British lawmaker, Morocco’s progress is evident across a wide range of sectors, including infrastructure development, improvements in education and healthcare, expanded housing, and major strategic projects that are reshaping the country for the long term.

For Powell, these achievements underscore the value of governance anchored in strategic continuity.

Reflecting on Morocco’s transformation over the past 27 years, he said the country’s clear long-term direction has become a decisive factor in attracting investors.

“What is important, particularly for investment, is that economic stakeholders clearly understand the direction a country is taking and are able to invest with confidence in a long-term strategy. That is something Morocco has done exceptionally well,” he said.

Powell also highlighted the strengthening of the strategic partnership between Rabat and London, signed last year under the Labour government, describing it as a new milestone in diplomatic relations that span more than eight centuries.

“This is one of the oldest diplomatic relationships in the world, with more than 800 years of history. I was especially pleased that we signed an ambitious new strategic partnership designed to deepen our cooperation,” he said.

The British MP also described Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal as a powerful catalyst for the Kingdom’s continued development.

“Hosting a World Cup is a tremendous opportunity to invest in transportation, stadiums, youth facilities, and infrastructure that will continue to benefit the population long after the tournament has ended,” he said.

Beyond infrastructure, Powell said the Moroccan national football team’s recent international achievements reflect a broader national strategy of investing in human capital.

“Sport is not just about entertainment. It also creates hope and opportunities for young people,” he said, describing the Atlas Lions as an “inspiring” team on the international stage.

The Labour MP also underscored Morocco’s geostrategic significance, describing the Kingdom as a vital bridge linking Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic.

“Morocco plays an absolutely essential role as a bridge between several regions of the world while asserting its regional leadership,” he said. “I believe Morocco has a vital role to play, not only in its region but also on the global stage,” Powell added.

The British MP pointed to the growing interest of British businesses in the Moroccan market, saying the prospects for expanding bilateral economic cooperation remain substantial.

“The opportunities are enormous,” he stated, while emphasizing the importance of translating the ambitions set out in the strategic partnership into tangible outcomes.

“It is positive to sign a document that sets out ambitious goals, but it is now up to us to turn those ambitions into concrete results,” he concluded, recalling the strong enthusiasm expressed by British companies during the recent celebration at the UK Parliament marking the first anniversary of the strategic partnership.
