The recent Meknes Business Event, held on January 20, 2024, served as a platform for experts to discuss the growth of the Ismaili capital. The event sparked engaging conversations centered around the theme of city marketing.
The meeting, held at the heart of the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences in Meknes, brought together influencers in the said field to share perspectives on the challenges faced by Meknes and underscore the important role of students in driving change and development, according to a press release by the organizers.
In this regard, Ahmed Larouz, CEO of Bridgizz &Climate Launchpad Morocco, expressed concern about the perceived stagnation of Meknes, and the resulting disillusionment among youth.
He emphasized the importance of a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region to empower the student population to create a meaningful impact in the city.
Simo Wow, the founder of Wow Hotel Group and an Airbnb coach, presented on his part compelling statistics on Airbnb’s presence in the Ismaili capital, as highlighted in the report.
His speech mainly revolved around the challenges and opportunities in the tourism sector in a city that faces a tourist conundrum despite its historical richness. Unlike cities like Marrakech, Meknes welcomes fewer visitors.
Statistically, Meknes has 478 Airbnb listings, with an average price of 678 MAD and a 28% occupancy rate. According to the same speaker, private rooms comprise only 30% of the listings.
While hosts can make between 70,000 and 80,000 MAD annually, 68% of Airbnb users only stay for one night, adding the same source.
This underscores the necessity for sustained tourism development and strategic marketing to invest in improving Meknes’ global appeal.
“Wow urged collaboration with cultural and tourism ministries to orchestrate targeted campaigns. He highlighted the significance of bringing influencers to experience Meknes firsthand, providing a unique opportunity to showcase the city’s cultural richness,” added the press release.
